Le retour de Renault dans le haut de gamme intervient au plus mauvais moment, c'est à dire deux ans après la crise pétrolière : équipée du moteur V6 PRV qui n'est pas un modèle de sobriété, la Renault 30 souffre également d'un positionnement mal défini (typée confort alors que la carrosserie se veut plus sportive que la concurrence) et d'une qualité de finition indigne de ce niveau de prix.
Une version turbo-diesel viendra relancer les ventes pendant quelque temps mais sera rapidement doublée par... une Renault 20 équipée du même moteur, et moins chère !
